Ponds

Q. I am in the process of putting a pond in an unfenced front garden and am worried about safety aspects. The pond, stream and waterfalls have all been formed with concrete, a pond liner underlay used, and then the pond liner. There is also extensive stonework. Are there any products, or do you have any suggestions as to how I might put something over the pond to stop children falling in. This would have to be something, which would not restrict plant growth, etc and would be as unobtrusive as possible.

A. Whatever you use unfortunately will be visible to some degree but one method is to use a strong rigid wire mesh with holes about 5cm square that you can then cut to shape. If you make it larger than the pond so it overlaps the sides it can be pinned in place with u-shaped wire pegs and plants will still grow through it whilst enabling you to remove it for cleaning.
