Kids' Patch!

Children really love seeing plants grow and some are so quick and easy that kids can't fail to be inspired.

There are plenty of bedding plants to get started with and buying plug plants remove all the fear of failure. A number of vegetable and herb plants are also good with the added attraction of something to eat as well.

Top Tips for Growing Plants

Ask a grown up to help you find little patch of garden of your own, but make sure it's in a good sunny spot where things will grow easily.

Some plants can give fast results - choose sweet peas, runner beans, nasturtiums, and tomatoes if you don't want to wait too long to see your garden grow.

To get started, you'll need some gardening gloves, a trowel, a watering can and a small area of soil, a grow bag or a container - about 30 cms square.

Using your trowel, dig a small hole about as deep as your finger - making it wide enough for your plant to fit into.

Take the plant carefully out of the container and push it gently into the hole then pat some more soil gently around the roots.

Sprinkle plenty of water around the roots of your little plant to make sure it settles into the ground well with a good drink.

Push the plant marker into the soil next to your new plant to remind you of who he is! Remember to keep the soil wet during the first few days by watering your plant regularly.

Wipe the soil off your trowel and your gloves and put them away safely for the next time you are gardening - and don't forget to wash your hands!
