Q&A - Conifers

Conifers

Moving established conifers

Q. I have an established conifer approx 5ft tall which I wish to move to a new site in my garden. Do you have any advice on how I should go about this? Are there any particular fertilisers I should use and what after care is necessary?

A. You should be able to move your conifer successfully. Several days before moving thoroughly soak the roots of the plant to at least 1m (3ft) around the trunk. Dig a trench around the roots about 60cm (2ft) from the trunk and 90cm (3ft) deep cutting off any thick roots. Then excavate underneath the roots cutting through any large ones as you find them so that you can rock the plant and eventually lift it out of the hole. Cut off any damaged root sections with secateurs and plant in a hole that is at least 1.5m (5ft) round and 1m (3ft) deep. Dig plenty of well-rotted manure and compost into the soil together with a general purpose fertiliser such as bonemeal or growmore and backfill into the hole around the roots, firming the soil as you go. Water well and keep watering right through to the winter and you should be successful.
