Rats in my compost

Q. My plastic garden compost bin worked fine in the summer, but proved a problem during the winter. The local rats simply dug under it and nested inside it, and I had to give up composting altogether. I have not come across any form of plastic bin with a rat-proof base.

A. Rats in the compost heap are very persistent. Try edging with bricks buried on end to stop them burrowing and also stand the bin on a water permeable membrane or thick mesh with very small holes such as used on rabbit hutches. Just don't give up on the composting as it is a cheap and valuable addition for keeping your soil healthy.
